I think this image works because of the expression and posture of the woman near the centre of the image. She is engaged with the photographer, and therefore us the viewers. It is as if she knows the photographer, who has surprised her. As the photograph renders what the photographer sees the illusion is that she has recognised us.
I think most photographs work when they reflect us, or some aspect of us.
