digging in the archives... EOS 10D, 24mm, ISO 800, cropped (ugh, cropping still makes me cringe)
gearhead note: the Leica M8 is a *tempting* piece of gear and I love the simplicity of it, but I got
soooo spoiled with the EOS 5D's high ISO performance...
There ya go, camera designers - give me a smallish camera with full manual control, a fixed lens (if
necessary) say 28mm or 35mm and a large sensor (at least APS size). Regarding the controls -
shutter speed on the body, aperture on the lens, ISO control on the body and autofocus with manual
override on the lens, anything else can be hidden in the menus. The Leica M8 almost cut it, but $5k
for not-so-good low light performace - wham bam, thank you mam.
- Ricoh GR-D is *this* close, but the small sensor is good for noise only
- Sigma DP-1 looks promising
long story short - take the M8 and cram a 5D sensor in it, add an ISO dial and be done
damn, I can't wait for the M9

i agree about the m8. a m with a crop factor just doesn't sound right. and the high iso performance of the 5d is just amazing!
however, i have seen prints from m8 files and they look amazing! better than i would have thought...

Leica is too far from my budget, all my street photos are made with a powershot s70(noisy at 400).I think Markus you got " the eye ", you can do good photos with any camera.
Alex Majoli (Magnum) is currently using Olympus compact cameras for his work and he does great photos.
Digital camera industry Knows about our craziness for new cameras and they are giving us new improvements drop by drop.

Markus,
Totally agreed with those specs but let me include one more : an optical and bright viewfinder.

Sounds like the Leica M8 has more issues though. There seems to be banding issue in shots where there is a bright point light source. Plus it's apparently over sensitive to the IR spectrum. Hopefully they'll get it right in the M9. ;)

Just curious about your thoughts on cropping now. It makes me ill to consider it, but some shots could be saved if I did so. I am sitting on the fence about it....thoughts?

I usually avoid cropping like the plague... here it just worked naturally.
