Black and White street photography – New York

“On any given day, you’ll find Markus Hartel cruising the subways of New York City with his Leica M9′s strap wrapped securely around his wrist, ready for action. If you walk by him, you probably won’t notice as he frames his camera from the hip, then clicks, and casually turns to pan one more.”

Hi Markus, great site love the images.
Question, have you gone completely digital or are you still shooting film as well and if so what film did you use for your b/w shots and do you try and replicate this in the digital darkroom.

    cheers Mick.

Dude i love your black and white street stuff, i have just got an Olympus Pen p1 do you think it will be any good for street work?

These are really wonderful images! The composition is spot on. I can learn much from studying these photographs. I imagine you must walk slow and constantly scan. My D300 is too big for this kind of work (although I use it anyway and am a bit obvious).

I’m still waiting for a poor man’s Leica. Perhaps an Olympus EP with an electronic viewfinder when it comes out will do the trick.

Great stuff, man. Favs for me would be the fire hydrant and the kid on the bus/train.

Oh man, I googled some information about street photography in NY, as I’m going to stay there for a ten days photography trip in May and found your brilliant portfolio. Thumbs up and best regards from Germany! Terrific b&w street shots!
