just recently the question came up how I carry and hold my camera in the streets. I figured it's easier to illustrate it with photos and a little video
(2MB Quicktime)
the question is probably more related to the strap - how to change quickly from horizontal to vertical. as you can see, I wrap the strap around my hand, not around my wrist! It's all about being quick. Don't carry your camera around your neck like a piece of jewelry or like a f'in tourist
Another benefit of wrapping the strap around your hand is security - no one will be able to snatch that cam away from you.
you think its funny - I'm serious

Great video! Here´s another take on holding a camera in the street:

Personally I couldn't carry a big camera like the Canon in one hand the way you do for more than a few minutes, but I´m small and not very strong. It would be interesting to read how shooting with a Dslr has influenced the way you see and work.
Best, G.

I'm the same. I feel the best way of holding these camera's is with the strap wrapped around your wrist, it's easy, you don't look like a stereotypical tourist and it's fast for those moments when you need to shoot fast..

nothing wrong with looking like a tourist, walking on to a subway train with a big smile on your face, a map of what's over ground and a camera around your neck is one sure way of getting ignored.

I just stumbled upon your site, and I am grateful you posted that video, this has saved my back and neck hours of chiropractic care and makes it faster to get the camera up. I shoot a fair bit of racing and there is nothing worse than having it around your neck for 10-12 hours. Plus, If I have to run or duck it makes it way easier to save me and my camera. Thanks for the tip.

I agree with Ed Richman. When I shoot with my digital EOS, i carry it around my neck, holding the camera (with 2 hands) and pointing the lens to the ground. When i see something, i quickly move the camera to my eye and click.
This way i can also easily modify the settings while walking, without having to move the camera.
I have tried holding the camera in one hand like in the video, but it gets heavy after a while, and i find that i have to move the camera to much when i see something. Mostly this movement is easily noticed by people, and it makes me hesitate.
Excuse my poor English...

Actually I always carry my Leica around my neck and I can not find a single problem with it...
